⬢ Personality:
KNOWLEDGEABLE The amount of knowledge Hua Cheng has is seemingly immeasurable. He knows about almost everything within the world. Much of it is brushed off as him saying he's just read a lot (which is true, he has), but he's taken the time to learn things ranging from literature, the arts, martial arts, weaponry, really the list just goes on. While he's more than happy to share his knowledge with Xie Lian, he can become kind of a smartass when replying to others and questioning why they aren't smart enough to get it themselves. He does have a willingness to learn and gather information, except apparently learning calligraphy. He's terrible.
NONCHALANT / NEUTRAL While his reputation precedes him for a reason, along the way things have become just a little bit twisted from the original intent. His actions are more self-motivated than not, and even though he's the most feared demon and from time to time can be mean or bratty, he tends to remain rather neutral. While the base reason for him becoming a ghost king is revenge, it wasn't his revenge, but rather was for Xie Lian. He doesn't kill for no reason, he doesn't do demonic acts, he just has done a lot of things to cause trouble for the Heavens because they mistreated Xie Lian. Hua Cheng is capable of being civil or even "nice" to people if it's advantageous to him in the end.
ARROGANT It isn't that Hua Cheng believes himself better than everyone, it's just that he thinks everyone else is basically trash. (Except, y'know, his husband. Yes, there is a theme in his personality.) Because he knows so much, he isn't afraid to flaunt it and can often be found "What, like it's hard?"ing toward other people — namely Heavenly Officials — because he just doesn't have the patience for any of them. He's very casual in showing his strength (like bashing someone's head in over and over with little effort) or spitting out facts about the past or present. And if he can use that knowledge to basically spit in the face of Heavenly Officials, all the better.
INSECURE At first glance, Hua Cheng might not appear this way, but it's something he's struggled with. Ever since he was young, he was bullied for his appearance: he was born with one red eye. Eventually, he did cover it, however, the bullying never really stopped. He began to believe that he was this wretched, ugly thing and that has followed him in the 800+ years he's been around. In spite of being described as devastatingly handsome by pretty much everyone, Hua Cheng is only just starting to believe that he's not as ugly as he's always believed. Because he's felt he's a wretched being, he's struggled with his feelings of self-worth and wasn't sure he even deserved Xie Lian's affections. But, he's also somewhat selfish in that regard because he wants those affections so, so much so he takes them and, over time, has become quite greedy for them.
RAGE / RESENTMENT So, here's the thing: Hua Cheng's personality is shaped by Xie Lian and all of them tie back to him. This one is no different. Because of all the mistreatment Xie Lian suffered over the years through his various ascensions and banishments, hate has grown sufficiently within Hua Cheng's heart. That saying that spite is a motivator is literally Hua Cheng. He waited many years before he was able to become a Supreme (the highest level demon) and began exacting his revenge on behalf of Xie Lian. Thirty-three gods bullied Xie Lian and Hua Cheng challenged all of them and swiftly beat them and when none of them followed through with their agreement, Hua Cheng burned all their temples to the ground in one night, effectively wiping them from existence in one fell swoop. He is loathe to Xie Lian's "closest friends" because Hua Cheng felt they abandoned him at a time when he most needed them. While on his path to become a Supreme, he wound up doing a good deed that tipped the scales to have him ascend and without a second thought, Hua Cheng lept back down because he harbors nothing but contempt for the Heavens. Some of his resentment, too, is toward himself because for a long time he was unable to do anything to help Xie Lian and had to watch him deal with one painful thing after another.
⬢ Powers:
- Wrath butterflies: these silver translucent butterflies have... so many functions. They can provide light in the dark, tell when something is an illusion or not, attack people, heal wounds (likely not heavy wounds?), surveillance by attaching to someone so Hua Cheng can hear what's going on in the surrounding area, they can also record conversations and Hua Cheng can rearrange the conversation as he sees fit. Hua Cheng can also disappear into a swarm of these to leave somewhere.
- Physical: he's kind of op in the shounen protag kind of way. He's known as one of the strongest beings in canon (ranking third, basically) and just has massive spiritual power. He's incredibly skilled using swords, though best at sabers.
- Spiritual Power / Magic / Mana: (whatever u would like to call it) he has some magic dice that are used for something called a Distance Shortening Array -- which is basically a form of teleportation -- and also depending on the number he can tell if danger will await him on the other side or not. He can also turn people into daruma dolls... either he can break the spell or it will wear out after a period of time. He can transform his appearance at will, which is mostly him shifting into his "San Lang" persona which is that of a ~17 y/o young man with both eyes. He can use this power to communicate telepathically within a communication array. ...He can turn (blood) rain into flower petals. This spiritual power can be passed on to others through some kind of bodily contact. He can make others look like himself and clone if he sees fit.
- Immmortal: more or less, not sure what else to call it. He can only be killed if his ashes are destroyed.
