⬢ Personality:
STRONG-WILLED, STUBBORN • in his youth (and naivete), Xie Lian had been much more self-assured of his convictions, to the point of even willing to criticize or condemn Heaven itself should it disagree with his views. nowadays he is not as loud about his beliefs, but he still maintains a great confidence in his moral compass, deferring to it rather than what he is told. while he is much more willing to consider others' wisdom and knowledge, at the end of the day he listens to his own heart and intuition... even if it gets him into trouble more often than not.
HUMBLE, SELF-DEPRECATING, GUILT-RIDDEN • Xie Lian has been put through a considerable amount of psychological torture that has all mostly culminated in a pretty bad case of survivor's guilt. these days, he does his best to put it all behind him and simply live on as best as he can, but these experiences coupled with his many years of living poor and downtrodden in the mortal realm has humbled him significantly. now it is very rare for him to feel shame or embarrassed, because he has already sunk to so many lows just to get by. without getting too caught up in the actual despair he'd felt during his lowest of times, oftentimes his past misfortunes would simply be brought up for self-deprecating humor. it's very hard for anyone's demeaning words or low opinions of him to get to Xie Lian, because in all honestly he has already heard them all before — and indeed thought many of them himself.
PERCEPTIVE, INTUITIVE • throughout the course of the novel there are many mysterious that Xie Lian has been at the forefront of solving, displaying his keen intellect and perception. one case in particular even took only a single off-handed statement from the perpetrator for Xie Lian to accurately come to a conclusion. (it should be noted, however, that even Xie Lian's keen perception has its limits, and can sometimes be ignored in favor of his faith and trust in a person)
RECKLESS, SELF-SACRIFICING • while Xie Lian's recklessness can be attributed in some part to the fact that he's immortal (and has been immortal for centuries), it should be noted that even before his ascension(s) he's always had a pretty low sense of self-preservation. he is of course very confident in his skills and his cultivation, but it's mostly because of his strong desire to protect and do good that he's willing to put himself in harm's way if it'll get the job done. more often than not, that tends to be his default solution to problems; instead of maybe spending a bit more time to find another way, Xie Lian will opt for the path that will end up hurting himself if he knows it will work. he's often quick to reassure others that he doesn't really feel pain anymore, or that he can't really die, but while it's meant to be comforting it does often come across as dismissal or even callousness in regards to the situation and others' concerns for him. in Xie Lian's eyes, by allowing himself to get hurt, he's the only one who would need to suffer, but he is often so focused on solving the problem that he doesn't realize his actions can still cause others emotional pain.
⬢ Powers:
DURABILITY, REGENERATION • Gods possess high durability that make them able to withstand many injuries that would otherwise be fatal to a human. Gods are also able to regenerate or heal from these wounds quite fast; usually the greater one's spiritual power, the faster, and Martial Gods in general are known to heal quite fast due to all the instances they've been injured in battle. Xie Lian in particular is incredibly tenacious, after having sustained many fatal injuries in his past.
INHUMAN PHYSICAL STRENGTH • Gods are also notably quite strong, where a single blow from them has been said to be strong enough to be fatal to a human. this strength also lets him jump higher and farther than a human ever could. especially as a Martial God, Xie Lian's spiritual power and prowess make him considerably powerful.
HIGH PAIN TOLERANCE • despite being immortal, Gods can still feel pain. Martial Gods in particular fight and get injured often enough that some pain can be dismissed. but because Xie Lian has suffered through so many fatal injuries (once even fatally stabbed over a hundred times in one night, for example) that he's said multiple times he can barely even feel pain anymore.
HIGH DANGER SENSES • due to many years of training and life as a Martial God, Xie Lian's senses are exceptional to the point he can (unless distracted or disoriented) easily predict oncoming danger and avoid it. he can also sense killing intent.
HIGH SPIRITUAL POWER • Xie Lian has always had incredibly exceptional spiritual power and potential for it. post-canon, as he is without his cursed shackles, his spiritual powers have returned and he is canonically the strongest and most powerful of all the Martial Gods. spiritual power itself can come in many forms, and it's not entirely clear in canon but some examples of Xie Lian's use of it is: controlling a giant divine statue of himself, creating sharp gusts of wind by slashing at the air either with his hands or any other sort of weaponry, detect evil presences and auras, create protection charms that can grant its user mild form of protection and the ability to send prayers directly to him, creating and enchanting talismans that have various effects, transferring souls from one body to another (so long as the other party is willing), perform passing rites for ghosts and the souls of the dead, create Distance-Shortening Arrays that essentially work like portals...
SPIRITUAL COMMUNICATION • using spiritual powers, Xie Lian can contact other Gods or ghosts with enough spiritual power to reciprocate. in canon it's called a communication array, and there are public ones (like the one set up for all Heavenly Officials in the Heavenly Capital) or private ones (that you can access directly if you know the other person's private password).
EXPERT SWORDSMANSHIP • Xie Lian has trained with swords and weaponry for a good portion of his human life, and displays skills so exceptional that he can fight well regardless if he's used to the weapon. he is not only a good fighter, but he is also extremely intelligent when it comes to fighting styles and the like, able to accurately determine what kind of weapon would be best for certain fighters.
EXPERT MARTIAL SKILL • he'd already been skilled at unarmed fighting because of his training and status as a Martial God, but after several fall from graces, Xie Lian has grown even more skilled due to all the times he's had to get himself out of fights without any weapon.
BAD LUCK • it's not really a power, but Xie Lian's fortune is so bad it affects practically every aspect of his life, and only Hua Cheng's extremely good luck can ever balance it out.
⬢ Inventory:
• a secondary outfit would be his Crown Prince of Xianle robes.
• his spiritual device, Ruoye, which is sentient white silk ribbon that, like Xie Lian, can sense danger and respond accordingly. it's exact length is undefined, but it's apparently considerable. when dormant, it remains wrapped around Xie Lian's arms and can pass off as regular bandages. it has a very playful and proud personality and enjoys showing off and receiving affection.
• Hua Cheng's ashes in the form of a diamond ring hanging off a silver chain.
• one red pearl earring.
• one red string tied into a bow on his left middle finger. it is magically and spiritually connected to a similar string tied around Hua Cheng's finger, which allows them to follow it and find each other if they're within distance. should the bow come undone, it means the other party has gotten injured.
• a pair of dice that, no matter what number is rolled, will always lead him to Hua Cheng should he be looking for him.
• the two library shirts will be the library card and support your local library ones.
