⬢ Personality: Very few knew the real Itachi Uchiha before he died. For most of his life, Itachi was exiled from the village where he was raised, hated by his own flesh and blood, spurned by those who once praised him, and feared by everyone else. His childhood had a huge impact on the person he became — or rather, the tool Konoha crafted. His personality reflected the fact he was exposed to the adult world far too soon. Itachi was detached as a child, withdrawn and apart from the desires of his clan even as they placed him on a pedestal, and this continued long into adulthood. Others saw him as single-minded and cold, bent on the destruction of the clan due to his own superiority, but these were only assumptions based on his outward demeanor. It was true he exuded an aloof, analytical, and disconnected attitude. When required to speak, Itachi gave the bare minimum to get his point across; he chose as few words as possible often with deep meaning. After starting at the Academy as a child, he was asked to share his dreams for the future. His response, “to become the best ninja ever and eliminate war from this world,” shocked his teachers and peers. Even at four years old Itachi carried a maturity far beyond the average.
Early on Itachi witnessed the horrors of war, irrevocably blossoming a desire in him for peace. This was the focal point of his entire character. Itachi despised the conflict and violence inherent in the shinobi world. He did not want to fight to kill, and he did not want his beloved younger brother to live in a world where bloodshed ruled. When engaged in combat, he rarely initiated physical violence; he preferred to end a battle as quickly as possible using genjutsu or other techniques. Itachi was at heart a pacifist. Though he became removed and cruel through necessity, isolating himself from the rest of the world, this was not completely his true self. Yet a lack of aggression was not compatible with the shinobi world, and often Itachi resorted to genjutsu to "break" the will of people rather than kill them, even viewing it as a success when his opponents gave up being shinobi as a result.
Itachi was most himself around Sasuke during childhood. There he was allowed to play the role of the caring older brother. He looked after Sasuke, doted on him, protected him against the immeasurable scale their father held them to. That said, he also instilled in his younger brother an undying pursuit for perfectionism that reflected his own. He never praised Sasuke because he didn't want him to believe that improvement was pointless. His love for Sasuke was one the defining characteristics of every decision Itachi made, every aspect of his personality, and every action he carried out. It was unarguably the most important relationship Itachi had while he lived, although it was one colored by blood and revenge and misguided intention. All of his actions put his younger brother before even Konoha itself, but due to his situation, Itachi was forced to behave cruelly toward Sasuke. He believed this was the way to achieve redemption for his own reprehensible acts and make Sasuke a hero.
Obito described Itachi's life as "hell," caught between two forces bent on using him as a weapon to destroy each other, and this wore on Itachi. He began to pull further away from the world, distancing himself from his family and few friends. His outward affection toward his younger brother gradually tapered off into stress and shame. The eventual ultimatum of choosing between Konoha and the Uchiha clan tore away the rest of that childlike innocence. Even if the purpose was altruistic, Itachi eliminated the last of his own emotions in order to go through with massacring his entire family. He put on a persona of glacial disregard for the rest of the world, both to protect himself and to further the lie that he was a villain, to a point where he even believed it of himself.
Itachi continued this way until his death. He roused respect and even intimidation in the other Akatsuki members he worked alongside, with the intention that he would one day die by Sasuke's hand. Kisame Hoshigaki was likely the only member of Akatsuki that Itachi was on decent terms with — they were partners on most missions and developed an understanding and appreciation for each other. The rest of Akatsuki Itachi treated coolly, disassociating himself from their ideals; underneath his cold exterior, he was still concerned for Konoha's safety and Sasuke's protection to an obsessive degree.
Itachi's intelligence and ability were never a question. He could manipulate those he wanted, particularly Sasuke, and inflict harm when necessary. He was highly analytical, working out the best maneuvers in combat with near-immediacy. In his short years at the Academy, he aced his tests due to his ability to perform mental calculations on the spot. When he wasn't training, he was reading everything he could on shinobi techniques, history, politics, and other subjects. Due to the fact he learned from a early age how to reason and think objectively, Itachi was able to perceive the weaknesses of others with incredible skill. Even still, Itachi never bragged or held his abilities over others. He never underestimated his opponents. If there was anything beyond that which led Itachi's existence until his death, it was the thin barrier between truth and deceit. It wasn't until after his death that he was able to reflect upon himself and his life, to the point of recognizing he'd fallen for his own lies. This regret and guilt remained at the core of Itachi's character, and it was further magnified after he was made aware of his own actions.
⬢ Powers: OH BOY BUCKLE IN. There are a lot, so I've tried to summarize them briefly below for easier reading. You can also find them further detailed in the history wiki link.
Genjutsu - These are the illusive abilities Itachi is most well-known for using on his opponents to avoid physical combat. He can twist their perception of the world at whim, manipulating it into mental torture as it suits him. The Sharingan eyes inherent in the Uchiha bloodline further this ability, yet some of the techniques he uses are extremely physically taxing on his body. It is theorized this is what led to his illness and eventual death.
Dojutsu (eye techniques) - This includes the Sharingan born into the Uchiha blood, allowing its user to track chakra, memorize techniques, and facilitate genjutsu illusions. The evolved form of Mangekyou Sharingan takes this even further, although it includes a high price to awaken.
Taijutsu (physical and combat skills) - Itachi's proficiency in this area is 4.5/5. He is adept at body movements and techniques, even going against shinobi much older than he is.
Ninjutsu (martial arts, strategy and tactics) - Itachi's proficiency in this area is 5/5. He is talented with strategy on the spot and is known for his unusual implement of crows as a decoy rather than the traditional tagged log, allowing him to trick and distract his opponents.
Intelligence/Strength/Speed/Hand seals - Itachi's intelligence ranks at 5, his strength at 3.5, his speed at 5, and hand seals at 5. Overall, Itachi is a masterful shinobi with a frightening range of capability at such a young age. He has always been able to pick apart his opponents and analyze situations strategically due to high intelligence, his impressive speed is remarked upon often, and he has memorized countless hand seals far beyond the average. His strength is not perfect, but in a man who excels more at agility and illusions, it's still noteworthy.
Bukijutsu (weapon techniques) - He excels in this area and specializes with shuriken especially, though he also uses a sword in combat (this was his primary weapon while in the ANBU). He can throw weapons at high speed in many different directions and strike his targets dead-on.
Nature transformation - Specifically, Itachi excels at the Fire Release technique. Uchihas possess an affinity for this element in particular. He can breathe fireballs and coat his weapons in fire. He also is shown to use Water Release, if less frequently.
Stamina - This ranks 2.5/5 and is considered Itachi's greatest weakness. He tires easily, and many of his abilities require a great deal of chakra. This is why in many cases Itachi will try to end battles as quickly as possible or otherwise conserve his strength.
The most game breaking abilities would be those associated with higher level Sharingan, where he is able to alter fate/outcomes of situations by messing with time. These are izanami and izanagi separately. I'd expect these to be nerfed (and he wouldn't use these anyway, unless it was a save-the-whole-world situation or something, partly because he'd go blind as a result lol). If there's anything else you think should be nerfed or changed, I'm totally open to it. Itachi's stamina is already fairly low, and overuse will give him symptoms of his illness as a result of accessing stronger abilities, so he has some restrictions already built in.
