Withstood pain to create weapons, waiting for one’s arrival
I have no regrets. This is the only path
My whole life was Unlimited Blade Works
Shirou Emiya is a 17-year-old boy who has lived his entire life in Fuyuki City. He attends Homurahara Academy and seems to be an ordinary boy. Secretly, however, he is a mage.
Because his adoptive father, Kiritsugu Emiya, passed away while he was young, Shirou has mostly had to take care of himself (with the exception of Taiga Fujimura coming around almost every day as a surrogate big sister, her family handling the ownership of his property, and so forth). Shirou possesses a surplus of life talents and is known to be “the perfect housewife”.
In particular, his cooking skills are incredible and even famous throughout his school. He is far from being a cheapskate, has no problems with cooking meals for others everyday, and will go out of his way to make his food extravagant. He does have a general distaste of Chinese food, however, because of a certain Chinese restaurant where he lives.
Shirou is stubborn and selfless to a fault. He can usually be called upon for help with menial tasks, and ask for nothing in return. In conversations he is either blunt or sarcastic, but he has trouble conveying this through body language, so it becomes hard for people to pick up on which is which. Occasionally, this will make him come across as either dense or ignorant. His facial expressions are rather easy to read, however, and it is easy to tell that he is not someone to openly dislike someone, especially right off the bat, meaning that it is unusual when he does.
Shirou was only able to become a mage because of his persistence when asking his father, Kiritsugu, to train him. He eventually gave in and taught Shirou magecraft, but he did it in a roundabout way, not only teaching him in an incomplete and improper method, but also allowing him to stop whenever he wanted (which is unusual among mages. Not that Shirou ever did stop).
Because of the trauma sustained in the Fuyuki Fire, as well as the ideals inherited from Kiritsugu Emiya, Shirou’s one true wish is to become a Hero of Justice so that he can save people. He has to become a Hero of Justice, so that there is meaning in why he survived when nobody else did. He has repressed his memories and life before the Fuyuki Fire.
This is why he does menial tasks without asking for anything in return. He acts selflessly and puts the lives of others far above his own. He takes on multiple part-time jobs that involve physical labor, so in addition to his training, he continues to make his body stronger. Shirou is actually quite physically strong and scarily capable of killing another person.
Shirou wants to become a Hero of Justice who can save everyone.
He is very self-destructive because of the mix of his ideals and trauma, and cannot stand the thought of someone being hurt for him or in his place. This is shown in how during the fight between Saber and Berserker, he jumped in the way of a lethal attack without any hesitation, and very nearly died as a result if not for Avalon becoming active again thanks to Saber’s presence.
Throughout the Fifth Holy Grail War, Shirou interacts (read: argues) with Archer constantly during the war. For a reason that bewilders Shirou himself, as well as Saber, Shirou dislikes Archer the moment they meet. This is because Archer is the future and ideal version of Shirou, having made a contract with the world and became a heroic spirit, while also having been betrayed by everything, including his own ideals, and as a result turned cynical.
The contradiction of Shirou Emiya and Heroic Spirit EMIYA existing at the same time allowed Shirou to gain Archer’s knowledge, memories, and techniques through their interactions, even allowing Shirou to clash properly with Saber during their spars, despite the fact that Saber was not going any easier on him than the day before, where she completely wiped the floor with him. This extreme growth-speed allowed him to even master Projection Magic and become a decent mage, despite his shoddy circuits. The speed of this growth even threatens to break his body as a result.
Additionally, through their interactions, Shirou begins to see the hypocrisy in his ideals. However, despite this, he does not give up on his ideals, and even manages to convince Archer that he will not allow his ideals to swallow him. His growth takes him on a path where he searches for a middle ground so that he can continue to pursue his ideals. This version of Shirou could arguably be the most balanced of the different versions of Shirou Emiya.
"I won't lose it. Even if it's foolish, I won't turn back. I know my dream isn't... even if I'm a fraud, I know... I know my dream isn't wrong!"
⬢ Powers: Shirou's Elemental Affinity and Origin are both "Sword". As a result, he is only able to specialize in a specific magecraft unique to him.
The only magic allowed to Shirou Emiya is a Reality Marble known as Unlimited Blade Works. All of his "abilities" are simply aspects/byproducts of what his Reality Marble is capable of.
Structural Grasping: The ability to understand the structure and design of objects as if looking at a blueprint. He can grasp the structure of weapons on sight alone, though other things such as appliances seem to require him to touch it first. In the world of magic, this is considered to be a pretty useless ability unless you're fixing broken heaters.
Reinforcement: Allows Shirou to analyze the structural composition of an object, and increase its effectiveness, such as making it more durable or its shape more practical. He can also use it to improve upon the physical capabilities of his own body, such as his eyesight, allowing him to see as far as four kilometers away.
Tracing (Projection): Hoo boy, this is the main ability of UBW, so this is gonna be LONG. Blame Fate for having incredibly complicated lore, world-building, and abilities.
A high-level skill, and the Shirou's "specialty". When Shirou would initially project things without the ability to Trace, the things he projects would be useless and hollow, only imitating the shape. However, the way UBW works is that he not only reproduces the materials needed for his unique form of Projection, but he also reproduces the history of whatever he projects, meaning that it quite literally fools the world into thinking it's real, so it sticks around indefinitely so long as Shirou doesn't "deny their existence", or put more simply, breaks.
Shirou's Tracing completely copies everything regarding the creation and existence of the object (though certain steps can be skipped for faster projection time, at the detriment of the projection quality).
He is only effectively able to reproduce swords, other weapons, and armor, but this specialty allows him to faithfully reproduce even legendary weapons. However these weapons always suffer some degradation, as Humans cannot conceptualize an object's existence with a single sense. He is capable of reproducing any sword that he has seen, though Noble Phantasms are always one rank below their original strength and armor costs three times the amount of magical energy, and he is capable of employing its entire history, allowing him to wield any weapon with the same proficiency of its original owner. He has to see the weapons as how their form as final product actually are with his own eyes to reproduce them, as even the blueprint of Zelretch is not enough to reproduce it, but by seeing it and Caliburn through shared memories of Justeaze Lizrich von Einzbern and Saber, he becomes able to fully trace them afterward.
(With the canon point Shirou comes from, however, he has NOT seen Caliburn or the Jeweled Sword Zelretch, so he cannot project those)
If the weapon is not made of materials that exist in the world, such as Ea, he cannot analyze or reproduce it, though he can tell its basic nature. He is also quite capable of creating his own original kinds of weapons, should he put his mind to it.
It is later identified that these abilities and Shirou's affinity with swords are concepts of Shirou's Reality Marble, Unlimited Blade Works. Rather than simply creating his projections in the real world, he actually reproduces them within the Reality Marble, as if he were loading a gun, and then projects them into the real world as if he were firing it. This allows him to prepare dozens of swords at a time for later use.
Shirou is unable to properly deploy or maintain Unlimited Blade Works due to a shortage of innate magical energy generation, but with a proper contract with a magus with a suitable level of magical energy, such as Rin, he is capable of using it. It is possible for him to one day be able to sustain it on his own (with enough training), but as of currently, he can only deploy and maintain Unlimited Blade Works if someone else is supplying the mana necessary.
So that's Shirou's ability... now for just what the heck a Reality Marble is!
The concept of a Reality Marble is one that centers around the materialization and projection of one's inner world onto reality following the Thaumaturgical Theory World Egg. Reality Marbles represent the pinnacle of all Bounded Fields where the boundary line becomes the space itself.
The created worlds are completely cut off from normal reality, projecting their internal landscape and sealing off the regular World. Following the World Egg theory, the actualization of a Reality Marble is the result of switching the Self and the World while keeping the boundary the same. The size of the Self and the World is switched, enclosing the World in a small container while the Self is expanded. The contained World is the World Egg and the name of the theory. They will encase anyone within range, causing them to disappear from view. The World constantly attempts to crush the unnatural bounded fields as they are not created by spiritual beings, meaning that it costs a great deal of magical energy to construct one and keep it stabilized.
Unlimited Blade Works: Infinite Creation of Swords is the Reality Marble of Shirou Emiya. It is the definite answer obtained by someone whose life was saved by a sword, actually merged and lived with a sword, and acted as a sword all of his life.
Both Archer and Shirou use an incantation to facilitate the invocation of the Reality Marble. It is close to a "Ten-Count" aria, using a poem about the caster as the basis, used to activate High-Thaumaturgy.
Shirou describes it as a suggestion to change himself and the words that will "connect Shirou Emiya". The lines of the incantation can be said at any time without requiring preparation. The first line is often used in order to strengthen a projection, such as with Archer's use of Caladbolg II and Shirou's use of Rho Aias.
Once the incantations have been completed, an illusionary fire that does not emit any heat spreads out to form a boundary and wall for the Bounded Field. The bright light fills the vision of those present, and manifests an open, barren desert. It is a kingdom of rubble littered with thousands, perhaps a countless number, of swords anchored in the ground like grave markers in a wasteland, yet are well preserved. It is a world likened to a steel mill, filled with weapons, and flames. The basis for the world in the Reality Marble is a hill of swords that spreads infinitely in his mind.
The Reality Marble's purpose is a steel manufacturing factory that produces the countless famous swords that are without their owners, extending into the horizon. It contains all of the raw materials and sorcery needed for the formation of the weapons, and it records and analyzes all weapons and defensive armaments encountered by the user. The number of unique weapons encountered and recorded by Archer exceeds numerous thousands, most of which are Noble Phantasms each possessing deadly powers. Their entire histories, compositions, and designs are all perfectly recorded, allowing for instant proficiency with the weapons by inheriting all combat skills and techniques utilized by their original owners.
Close combat weapons such as swords, spears, and halberds are the main focus of the Reality Marble in accordance with Shirou's Origin of "Sword", which also makes it impossible to record or reproduce modern weaponry like guns and other mobile weapons. Weapons encountered are immediately analyzed with a single glance, enabling them to be projected immediately afterwards, and once projected, they are stored within the Reality Marble for later use.
The analysis of weapons is limited only to the direct use of human senses, meaning that blueprints and materials will be unable to provide the necessary information for a proper analysis.
Once the Reality Marble is deployed, all of the weapons are available for use without the need to project them from scratch as they are physically there in the Reality Marble, and any weapon can immediately be called to the user's hands, pulled from out of the ground, or levitated even while the user is in direct combat. The weapons reproduced once the Reality Marble is first activated will not consume magical energy, but those used or destroyed within it will add to the cost of maintaining the Bounded Field. The amount of energy used to reproduce weapons that did not exist after the Bounded Field was expanded and the amount of energy used to recreate weapons destroyed while it is activated is extremely costly.
The poem at the beginning of Shirou's personality section is the incantation required for activation. However, even with knowledge of how to activate it, he still can't because he's unable of generating the large amount of magical energy required.
